There’s a story in the Gospel of John that has always struck me. Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at the well in John 4, a woman carrying shame and thirst that went far beyond water. She came with her jar, expecting to fill it as she had done countless times before. But that day, she encountered the Living Water. Jesus told her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” Her emptiness was met with fullness, not from the well she drew from, but from the Savior who stood before her.
That story echoes through Tauren Wells’ song “Empty.” With his signature blend of soulful vocals and heartfelt honesty, Wells sings about the futility of chasing after things that never satisfy. Fame, success, possessions — they all leave us hollow if Christ isn’t at the center. The song is a reminder that emptiness isn’t something to hide; it’s the very place where God longs to meet us, just as He met the woman at the well.
I know what it feels like to chase after things that don’t fill the soul. The world offers substitutes that glitter but never satisfy. “Empty” resonates because it points us back to the truth that only Jesus can fill the void. It’s not about pretending we’re whole — it’s about admitting our need and letting Him be the answer.
Scripture reinforces this truth. In Ecclesiastes 1:2, Solomon declares, “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” He had tasted wealth, wisdom, and pleasure, yet found them empty apart from God. In Isaiah 55:2, the Lord asks, “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” And in Philippians 3:8, Paul writes, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Each verse reminds us that fullness is found only in Him.
The call is clear: don’t keep pouring into jars that leak. Don’t wait until the emptiness overwhelms you. Let Christ fill the space today. He is the Living Water, the Bread of Life, the one who satisfies the deepest hunger of the soul. Now is the time to stop chasing shadows and embrace the substance of His presence.
