NEEDTOBREATHE “Happiness”  (Share Worthy Song)

Some songs don’t just entertain—they wrestle with the tension between longing and purpose. NEEDTOBREATHE’s “Happiness,” from their 2016 album Hard Love, is one of those songs. Frontman Bear Rinehart has said the track is about the sacrifices we make in pursuit of change, and how real joy isn’t found in chasing fleeting happiness but in living with purpose. That’s why the song feels less like a celebration of easy pleasure and more like a prayer for something deeper.

I connect with that tension. There have been times in my own journey where I thought happiness meant comfort, success, or everything falling into place. But the older I get, the more I realize that happiness without purpose is hollow. The joy that lasts is the kind that comes when you’re walking in the calling God has placed on your life—even when it costs you something.

Scripture speaks to this directly. Jesus said: “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25). That’s the paradox “Happiness” leans into: sometimes the road to true joy requires sacrifice. It’s not about clinging to what feels good in the moment, but about surrendering to what God is doing in the long run.

The verses of the song even carry a plea for forgiveness, acknowledging mistakes and the pain caused along the way. That honesty makes the chorus hit harder—it’s not a shallow chant of “everything’s fine,” it’s a cry for the kind of happiness that comes with redemption. Paul echoes this in Romans 5:3–5: “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.” That’s the kind of joy that can’t be stolen.

For me, this song is a reminder that happiness isn’t the goal—Jesus is. And when He’s at the center, happiness becomes a byproduct of living in His purpose.

Please, I beg you, don’t just chase what feels good. Pursue what lasts. Let “Happiness” remind you that joy rooted in Christ is worth every sacrifice. Share it with someone who needs to be reminded that true happiness isn’t found in the moment—it’s found in Him.
