New Album “Happy” Out now!
Every once in a while, an artist releases something that doesn’t just sound good — it feels like a turning point. A breath of fresh air. A reminder that joy is still possible, healing is still happening, and God is still writing stories that surprise us. That’s why we chose Jenn Johnson as this week’s Artist of the Week. After two decades of shaping worship around the world, she steps forward with HAPPY, a debut solo album that feels like a mosaic of her life — broken pieces made beautiful, sorrow turned into strength, and joy rediscovered in the presence of Jesus.
Jenn’s journey has never been about spotlight or platform. It’s been about obedience. About faithfulness. About learning to walk with God through seasons of grief, gratitude, confusion, and clarity. As co‑founder of Bethel Music, she has helped birth songs that have circled the globe — “Goodness of God,” “The Blood,” “Holy Forever,” and so many more. But HAPPY is different. It’s personal. It’s vulnerable. It’s the sound of someone who has lived enough life to know that joy isn’t the absence of pain — it’s the presence of God in the middle of it.
The album opens with “Walk With Me,” a song that feels like a prayer whispered on a day when you don’t have the strength to pretend. Jenn sings it with a steady honesty, inviting God into the places where clarity is missing and courage feels thin. It echoes the promise of “Your ears shall hear a word behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’ — Isaiah 30:21, a reminder that God doesn’t just call us forward — He walks with us. And when the path feels uncertain, “You make known to me the path of life.” — Psalm 16:11 becomes more than a verse; it becomes oxygen. This song reminds us that faith isn’t about knowing every step — it’s about trusting the One who does.
Then there’s “Mad At God,” one of the most vulnerable songs Jenn has ever released. Written in the wake of losing her mother‑in‑law, it captures the ache of grief, the honesty of disappointment, and the courage it takes to bring your real emotions before God. It’s the kind of song that gives people permission to feel what they’ve been afraid to admit. Scripture meets that rawness with compassion: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18. And when words fail, the cry of Job becomes our own: “Oh, that I knew where I might find Him… I would lay my case before Him.” — Job 23:3–4. Jenn’s voice carries the weight of someone who has learned that God isn’t intimidated by our honesty — He invites it. “Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” — Psalm 62:8 becomes the heartbeat of this song, reminding us that God meets us even in the emotions we don’t know how to process.
But HAPPY doesn’t leave us in the valley. “Thank You Lord,” featuring Brooke Ligertwood, lifts the album into a place of gratitude that feels both grounded and joyful. It’s not a shallow thankfulness — it’s the kind that comes after walking through fire and realizing God never left. Their voices blend like two women who have seen God’s faithfulness up close and can’t help but sing about it. Scripture calls us into that same posture: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18. Gratitude becomes a weapon, a lifeline, a way of remembering who God has been. And as the psalmist declares, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” — Psalm 103:2, we’re reminded that thanksgiving isn’t denial — it’s declaration. Jenn and Brooke carry that declaration with conviction, echoing the truth of “Whatever you do… do it giving thanks to God.” — Colossians 3:17.
What makes Jenn Johnson’s HAPPY so special is that it doesn’t pretend life is simple. It doesn’t gloss over pain or rush past the hard parts. Instead, it invites us into a story where joy and sorrow coexist, where faith grows in the tension, and where God meets us in every chapter. Jenn’s voice carries the sound of someone who has lived through storms and found Jesus steady in every one of them. Her songs don’t just inspire — they guide. They comfort. They challenge. They remind us that joy is not fragile, and hope is not optional. It’s who we are when we belong to Him.
This week, let Jenn’s story and her new album encourage you to take a step — toward healing, toward honesty, toward gratitude, toward God. Let it remind you that joy is not something you chase; it’s something God cultivates in you. And maybe, just maybe, this is your moment to let Him do that work.
