 Songs That Carry You Through

Joel and Luke Smallbone didn’t set out to be just another band. Born in Australia and raised in a large, musical family, they immigrated to the U.S. with nothing but suitcases, a few connections, and a deep faith that God had a plan. Before they ever stood under stage lights, they were hauling gear and singing background for their sister, Rebecca St. James. Those early years taught them humility, hard work, and the truth that ministry starts long before the microphone is in your hand.

Their journey hasn’t been without hardship. Luke has battled a life‑threatening illness, Joel has walked through seasons of anxiety and loss, and both have faced the grind of building a career from the ground up. But through it all, they’ve chosen to live out the meaning of their name — laying down their lives for their King and their country.

Their music has been more than a soundtrack for me — it’s been a lifeline.

  • God Only Knows — In some of my darkest seasons, when I felt unseen and misunderstood, this song reminded me that there is One who knows every detail of my story and still calls me His. It echoes Psalm 139:1, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.”

  • Burn the Ships — This anthem taught me to stop looking back at the wreckage and start moving toward the future God has for me. Like Philippians 3:13‑14 says, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…”

  • The Proof of Your Love — This one challenged me to live my faith out loud, not just in words but in action. It’s 1 Corinthians 13 set to music — a reminder that without love, everything else is noise.

  • Relate — In a divided world, this song has pushed me to see people through the eyes of grace, remembering Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

What I love about For King & Country is that their songs don’t shy away from the hard stuff — they meet you in it. Whether it’s the cinematic swell of Shoulders lifting your gaze heavenward, or the joy‑filled defiance of Joy in the middle of a storm, their music is spiritual warfare wrapped in melody.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” I’ve heard that verse in their harmonies, felt it in their lyrics, and seen it in the way they use their platform — from films like Unsung Hero to their outreach work that quietly changes lives.
