Anne Wilson – Living Water | Breakthrough Anthem

I didn’t get to lay things down. I lost them. The drinking, the smoking, the way I numbed the pain — it all came to a halt when I did time. And by then, the damage was done. My family? Gone. My role as a father? Lost. I look back and wonder what could’ve been different. If I’d made better choices. If I’d led instead of drifted. If I’d pointed them toward Jesus instead of toward my own broken habits. That ache doesn’t go away. But neither does grace.

There are days I ask myself: Would God still be using me if things hadn’t ended the way they did? Would I be speaking life into others if I hadn’t first lost everything? It’s a question that haunts and heals. Because Scripture shows us again and again — God uses the ones who’ve failed. Paul called himself “the worst of sinners,” and yet God used him to write half the New Testament. David committed adultery and murder, and still God called him “a man after my own heart.” Peter denied Jesus three times, and still became a foundational leader in the church Jesus built on the Rock.

That’s the kind of redemption Anne Wilson sings about in Living Water. It’s not a song for the polished. It’s for the thirsty. For the ones who’ve run dry and know it. The lyrics don’t just invite — they plead: “Come on down to the living water / Waves of mercy washing over you.” That’s not just poetic. That’s personal. It’s the kind of mercy that met me when I had nothing left to offer.

Anne wrote this song out of her own grief — after losing her brother, she turned to music as a way to process pain and proclaim hope. Living Water became a declaration that Jesus doesn’t wait for us to be clean — He meets us in the dirt and offers renewal.

John 4:13–14 says, “Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” That’s not just relief — that’s restoration. And it’s echoed in Joel 2:25, where God says, “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.” That verse hits hard. Because I’ve lost years. But God promises to redeem even that.

Then there’s 1 Timothy 1:15–16, where Paul writes, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me… Christ Jesus might display his perfect patience.” That’s the story. That’s my story. That’s the story this song sings.

So if you’re sitting in regret, wondering if God can still use you — hear me: He can. He does. He will. You’re not disqualified. You’re a candidate for grace. Don’t wait until you feel worthy. Come thirsty. Come broken. Come now.
