Fire, Faith, and Fighting the Good Fight

Skillet has never been a band that blends quietly into the background. From their start in Memphis in 1996, John Cooper and his wife Korey have carried a fire that refuses to be dimmed. Over the years, through lineup changes and the shifting tides of the music industry, they’ve stayed anchored to the same mission: to speak truth and hope into a world that’s desperate for both. Alongside drummer and vocalist Jen Ledger and guitarist Seth Morrison, they’ve built a sound that’s as fierce as it is faith‑filled — a collision of hard rock, symphonic swells, and electronic grit that somehow manages to feel like both a battle cry and a lifeline.

I first connected with their music in a season when I needed both. Awake and Alive came blasting through my speakers at a time when I was spiritually numb, just going through the motions. The chorus hit me like a jolt — a reminder that faith isn’t meant to be half‑awake, that we’re called to stand our ground and live fully alive in Christ. It brought to mind the words in Ephesians 6:13, urging us to put on the full armor of God so we can stand when the day of evil comes. That song shook me out of complacency and into prayer, and I’ve seen it do the same for others who were drifting.

Then there’s The Last Night, a song that feels like a conversation between someone ready to give up and a friend refusing to let them go. I’ve been on both sides of that moment — the one in the pit, and the one reaching in to pull someone out. The lyric that promises, “This is the last night you’ll spend alone,” echoes Psalm 34:18, which says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. I’ve shared that track with people who felt unseen, and I’ve watched it break through walls that sermons couldn’t touch.

Not Gonna Die became my soundtrack in a season of spiritual warfare, when fear and exhaustion were louder than faith. Its defiance — the refusal to stay down — reminded me of 2 Timothy 1:7, that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self‑control. It’s more than adrenaline; it’s a declaration that the enemy doesn’t get the final word. I’ve seen it light a fire in people who were ready to quit, reminding them that if God’s not done, neither are they.

What makes Skillet so important isn’t just their sound, it’s their willingness to carry the Gospel into places where it’s rarely heard. They’ve stood on stages at mainstream rock festivals and in church parking lots, and in both places they’ve been the same — unashamed, unfiltered, and unafraid to speak the name of Jesus. Their music has been a shield when I needed protecting, and a sword when I needed to fight. For anyone reading this who feels like they’re in the middle of a battle, their songs are a reminder that you’re not alone, you’re not powerless, and your story isn’t over. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still, and thanks be to God, He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
