Matthew West – While I Can | Breakthrough Anthem

We all think we have more time. More time to say what matters. More time to show up. More time to forgive, to heal, to love. But life doesn’t always give us the luxury of later. That’s the heartbeat of While I Can by Matthew West — a song that doesn’t just tug at your emotions, it calls you to action.

Matthew wrote this one after walking through loss and realizing how easy it is to let the important things slip through the cracks. The song is a reminder that we don’t get to choose how much time we have, but we do get to choose what we do with it. “I don’t wanna wait to say what I need to say / I don’t wanna wait to love somebody.” That’s not just a lyric — it’s a wake-up call.

This song speaks to everyone — the ones who’ve lost someone and wish they’d said more, the ones who are still holding back, and the ones who are just now realizing how fragile life really is. It’s not about guilt. It’s about grace. It’s about using the breath in your lungs to speak life while you still can.

This song cuts deep for me because there’s so much I long to do while I can. I carry the weight of loss in my family and the constraints that come with it, yet I’m still praying for reconciliation in God’s time. Even in the waiting, the desire is strong — to speak life, to love boldly, to pour out everything I can while breath is still in my lungs. While I Can reminds me that even in limitation, I can choose intention. I can choose grace. And I can trust that the seeds I plant now will bear fruit in His season.

James 4:14 puts it in perspective: “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” That verse doesn’t minimize our lives — it magnifies the urgency. And Ephesians 5:15–16 follows it up with a charge: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” That’s the call — to live with intention, not assumption.

Even Psalm 90:12 gives us this prayer: “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” That’s not about counting down — it’s about waking up. It’s about realizing that every moment is a gift, and every word we speak can build or break, heal or harm.

So if there’s something you’ve been meaning to say — say it. If there’s someone you’ve been meaning to love better — love them now. Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Don’t wait for the funeral. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Do it while you can.
