Tenth Avenue North – Control (Somehow You Want Me) Melodies of Mercy

Some songs don’t just speak to the ears — they go straight for the grip you’ve been holding on your life. Control (Somehow You Want Me) is one of those. Written out of the band’s own wrestling with surrender, it’s a confession wrapped in melody: the realization that the God who spoke the stars into being actually wants us — not because we’re perfect, but because we’re His.

Tenth Avenue North has always had a way of putting deep spiritual truths into words that feel like they were pulled from your own journal. This song came from a season where the band was learning that control is an illusion — that the tighter you hold, the more you lose. The chorus is almost scandalous in its honesty: the Creator of the universe not only allows us to let go, but wants us to.

I know that lesson well. There was a time when I thought the only way to survive was to keep my hands clenched around every detail of my life. I believed that if I could just manage it all, I could keep the chaos out. But the truth was, I was exhausted, and the walls I’d built to protect myself were the same ones keeping God’s peace from getting in. It was in that place that Matthew 16:25 came alive for me: “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” That’s not poetic metaphor — it’s the paradox of the Kingdom.

The beauty of Control is that it doesn’t pretend surrender is easy. It acknowledges the fear of letting go, but it also points to the freedom on the other side. Psalm 37:5 says, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this.” That’s the invitation — not to micromanage God, but to trust Him enough to hand Him the keys.

And here’s the mercy in it: God doesn’t just take control because He can — He takes it because He loves. The line “Somehow You want me” is the heart of the Gospel. It’s the reminder that surrender isn’t about losing yourself; it’s about finding yourself in the One who knows you better than you know you.

If you’ve been white‑knuckling your way through life, maybe it’s time to loosen your grip. Not tomorrow. Not when things calm down. Now. The same God who holds the galaxies together is more than able to hold you. Let Him.

Tenth Avenue North’s “Control (Somehow You Want Me),” from the album Followers, is a powerful surrender anthem — reminding us that God wants us, not our perfection. Add the full album to your collection [here on Amazon] and let grace lead the way.
