TobyMac & Blessing Offor – The Goodness

There are valleys you never expect to walk through — the kind that change you forever. For TobyMac, The Goodness was born in one of those valleys. After the devastating loss of his firstborn son, he found himself writing songs that were raw with grief. But somewhere in that long stretch of sorrow, God began to give him glimpses of light — reminders that His goodness hadn’t left, even when the pain was still fresh. One day, TobyMac scribbled on a napkin, “You’re still the goodness in my life,” and that seed grew into this song.

Bringing in Blessing Offor — whose own life testifies to God’s faithfulness through hardship — gave the track a second voice of resilience. Together, they sing not about a goodness that erases the storm, but a goodness that stands unshaken in the middle of it. It’s a celebration born from scars, not from ease.

Psalm 145:5‑7 says, “They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works—and I will proclaim your great deeds. They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.” That’s not a call to wait for perfect circumstances before you praise — it’s a call to proclaim His goodness while the battle is still raging. And Psalm 23:6 drives it deeper: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” That’s not a someday promise; it’s a right‑now reality for those who belong to Him.

I’ve learned that the goodness of God isn’t fragile. It doesn’t vanish when life gets messy. It’s not dependent on my mood, my circumstances, or my understanding. It’s steady, pursuing, and present — even in the shadows. That’s the heartbeat of The Goodness: a defiant joy that refuses to let pain have the final word.

If you’re in a season where the darkness feels heavy, don’t wait for the storm to pass before you look for His hand. Start naming the glimpses of His goodness you can see right now — the breath in your lungs, the people who stand with you, the moments of beauty that break through the gray. Speak them out. Sing them loud. Because the more you look for His goodness, the more you’ll see it — and the more you see it, the more you’ll remember that He’s never left.
